Invisalign® Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a teeth straightening device that can be an alternative to braces for some patients. Instead of the metal brackets and wires that traditional braces are made of, Invisalign is made of a transparent plastic. There are 2 Invisalign aligners, one for the top row of teeth and one for the bottom row of teeth. The aligners snap snugly over the teeth, as they are custom made for each patient.

Who Should Consider Invisalign?

Both adolescents and adults can be good candidates for this kind of teeth straightening. Invisalign works best in people who have mild to moderate teeth crowding or bite problems. Invisalign doesn't correct very severe alignment issues. The team at Beverly Hills Specialty Dental Care will be happy to help patients determine whether this treatment is right for them.

How Are the Aligners Made?

The dentist will create impressions of the patient's mouth. These impressions are sent to a lab where the Invisalign retainers are fabricated based on their exact dimensions. The dentist will check the fit of the aligners to make sure that they don't shift while being worn. If any small adjustments are needed, the dentist will make those before the patient begins their Invisalign treatment course.

Is Invisalign Worn Full Time?

Invisalign is worn almost full time, with 22 hours a day being the average time that most people wear the aligners. The aligners should be removed to eat and to do regular teeth care like brushing and flossing.

How Long Will Invisalign Treatment Last?

This can vary by person. Each pair of Invisalign aligners is used for 2 weeks, and is then swapped for a new pair of aligners that will continue the alignment process. The shortest treatment course is usually around 9 months, but treatment may take about 18 months in most people.
