Crowns & Bridges Q & A

What is a dental crown?

Dental crowns are used as a cap positioned over a tooth which restores the shape, size, strength, and improves appearance. Once the crown is cemented in place, it encases the full portion of the tooth which is visible above the gum line. Dental crowns can be used to:

  • Cover an implant
  • Hold a dental bridge in place
  • Protect a weak tooth from breaking
  • Secure pieces of a cracked tooth together
  • Cover and support a tooth with a large filling
  • Cover a misshaped or severely discolored teeth
  • Restore a broken tooth, or one that has been severely worn down

What different crowns are available?

Based upon the treatment you need, and your preferences, there are several different crowns available. Permanent crowns can be made from metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, all-resin, or all-ceramic.

  • Metal – when metals are used in crowns they can be made from gold alloy or a base-metal alloy. Metal crowns last the longest out of the options available and can withstand the pressure of biting and chewing forces.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal – these dental crowns can be dyed to match the look of your natural teeth for a balanced appearance. These types of crowns are a good choice for front or back teeth.
  • All-resin dental crowns – they’re less expensive than other available crown types.
  • All-ceramic or all-porcelain dental crowns - these are a better option for people with metal allergies. They can be matched to the natural color of your remaining teeth.

Crowns can have either temporary or permanent placement. Temporary crowns can be made of acrylic or stainless steel. These types of crowns are usually used for a temporary restoration until a permanent crown is ready.

What is the difference between a crown and a bridge?

Crowns are used as restoration for an existing tooth to get it back to a more natural appearance. A bridge is used to help fill the gaps from missing teeth. Bridges and crowns are different from dentures, as they are fixed prosthetics. If a problem comes up, causing additional treatment, a dentist will be the only one able to remove these materials.

Why would I need a dental bridge?

Dental bridges are used to fill gaps from missing teeth and help retain the structure of an individual’s smile. When a tooth is lost, it creates a gap in the alignment of teeth. When the space is no longer filled with a tooth, the others are more likely to move out of place. A dental bridge can help keep the teeth in balance.
