Cosmetic dentistry includes nearly any dental treatment or procedure that is designed to beautify the smile. Although cosmetic dentistry focuses primarily on enhancing the appearance, it can also make the teeth stronger and more functional in some cases. Some of the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures today include teeth whitening, veneers, crowns, and teeth straightening with appliances like Invisalign.
If the procedure is done purely for cosmetic reasons and has no structural or functional benefits, it's typically not covered by dental insurance. An insurance company typically views cosmetic dentistry procedures like teeth whitening in the same way that they view beauty enhancements like anti-aging treatments, which means they are categorized as non-necessary. However, if the cosmetic procedure is something like a bridge, there may be a chance that insurance will cover it. A dental bridge does make the smile more beautiful, but it also improves the bite and prevents teeth from shifting. Therefore, the insurance company may categorize it as a necessary dental procedure. Patients should speak with their dental insurance company to gain a better understanding of exactly which procedures will be covered.
Teeth whitening is typically done primarily in the comfort of the patient's home. The dentist will create custom retaining trays that will hold the dental grade whitening gel. The patient will take the retaining trays and the whitening gel home to use on a daily basis. Most people do the whitening for at least 2 weeks. At the end of the treatment, the teeth are often whitened by several shades.
Veneers and crowns are restorations made from porcelain. They are custom made to match the look of the tooth. Veneers cover the outer part of the tooth while crowns cover the entire tooth. Veneers and crowns are used to enhance the shape, size, color, and overall look of the teeth. They can cover issues like cracks, discoloration, chips, and more.
